The Slaves
The Slaves were a big reason why the Civil War happened because they wanted to be free and not working in the south so they tried to escape to the north. Sometimes they were successful sometimes they were not. In the Northern Sates of America and farther north those people didn’t believe that slavery was right. When the south slaves escaped the people down south wanted their slave back so
they started a war over getting their slaves back.
they started a war over getting their slaves back.
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln is involved in this because he abolished slavery and the southern people didn’t agree with that too well. So they wanted to keep their slaves but when their slaves escaped they went to go get them back with force.
Dred scott
Dred Scott was a slave witch wanted citizenship. His case in court traveled all the way to Supreme Court. The famous Dred Scott Decision in 1859 denied his request and said that no one with African American blood could become An American citizen. This mad the north want to free the slaves with all their plans. The north thought that decision was wrong. So when the north started helping slaves escape the south got mad and wanted to take back their slaves with force.
States Politically Over Powered
States were Politically over powered because the American government at this time was pretty weak. This meant states could choose if they were pro-slavery or anti-slavery. This made America unbalanced. Then the north wanted to do something about slavery so they started helping the slaves escape to the north and the southern people were out-raged and went to go get their slaves back with force.
The Abolitionists
Some abolitionists actively helped runaway slaves to escape "the Underground Railroad," and there were instances in which men sent to retrieve runaways were attacked and beaten by abolitionist mobs. To the slave holding states, this meant Northerners wanted to choose which parts of the Constitution they would enforce, while expecting the South to honor the entire document. The most famous activist of the underground railroad was Harriet Tubman, a nurse and spy in the Civil War and known as the Moses of her people.
New Territories
America grew rapidly in the 1800’s, so with the north and the south seeing that that was
an opportunity to make that area pro or anti-slavery. It was a big race to see who got there first. But, for instance, if the south took over northern Texas probably later the whole state of Texas will become pro-slavery. Also, if the south gained a new state on its side, that means the north would get an anti-slavery state to make it equal again.
